On hancock

Not

But how cool is it that they changed the reflection in his sunglasses to fit the place it was playing? This is the Norwegian poster, with the ski jump Holmenkollen (the old one *sob*)

And not

Though he did have a fancy signature which is what makes him the link to today's topic...

Not even

I have no idea who this one was, other than what you can see in the picture. A picture that was taken in Arlington, VA.

Rather, the Hancock I was thinking of is the following:

John Hancock

n. Informal
A person's signature.
[After John Hancock (from the prominence of his signature on the Declaration of Independence).]
And the John Hancock in question is of course our Hancock number two up here. So it wasn't entirely far off to include him. (And the superhero Hancock is named after him as well. Sort of. As is probably Hancock number three, but this is just a guess on my part.)

Anyway, it was the signature aspect I was getting at (though none of this technically have anything to do with my signature. I'm making some very questionable connections today...). You see, I've been tagged, by Vatche from The Student Writer's Mind. The challenge goes as follows:

Write down (by hand!) on a piece of paper the following:

1. Name/Blog Name

2. Right handed, left handed, or both?

3. Favorite letters to write
4. Least favorite letters to write
5. Write out "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog"

6. Write in CAPS:

BABOON

SPLENDOR

ONOMATOPOEIA

FLIP-FLOPS

HUZZAH!

7. Favorite song lyrics

8. Tag 7 people

9. Whatever else strikes your fancy

And here is my attempt (notice the GREEN ink. I don't always write in green, but I do prefer it.)

If it's hard to read (though if that is hard to read, you might have trouble reading this as well...), you can probably click on it to enlarge it. I think. I'm farly sure, actually.

And just to prove to Leanne that I have been knitting (but that it isn't worth showing anyone - which is why I am showing it. Logical, no?)

The "before" shot of my notebook. Which also includes the view from my window (not much) and my knitting (even less much).

As for passing the tag on, I have picked a few:

Natasha at Coffee Rings Everywhere because even though I have known her for years I don't think I have ever seen her handwriting. About time!

Tami at Confessions of a Watery Tart because she writes all her novels longhand in the bath tub! Clearly there must be something special about her handwriting.

Leanne who resisted the epidemic blog virus the rest of us caught a while back, until we lured her in through collaborative blogging over at Burrowers, Books and Balderdash. She still hasn't established her own blog, but I'd be more than happy to post the result of this challenge here if she'll agree to do it ;) I have seen Leanne's handwriting, but she is one of the few people I know who would get to cross off "both" for number two up there, so it should be interesting...

These are not seven people, so if you think you have a beautiful/weird/show-and-tellable handwriting and/or Hancock, I suggest you pick it up even if you weren't tagged ;)

Aaaaaand of course this wasn't supposed to post until morning... Meh. Alright, this is officially my Monday post. It's Monday, I say. Not Sunday. Monday. Monday, Monday. Did you know that in Norwegian we don't write the name of the days with capital letters? So Monday would be monday (or actually, mandag, since we also have a name for it, not just a punctuation rule...). This is why it is difficult for Norwegians to remember to capitalize the first letter of weekdays when learning English, and it is why we tend to do it in Norwegian as well after having written English for a while.

Have I convinced you that it is Monday yet?

You have nice handwriting, too.

Your handwriting reflects your personality perfectly!

Alex - really? Thank you. I actually think it is kind of messy with the occasional neat streak
(I can write nicer, but this roughly reflects how I actually write. This is how I would write on a grocery list, for instance).

Clarissa - yeah, I suppose it kind of does. Messy with neat streaks... ;)

I agree with Alex. Your handwriting is very nice. Much better than mine :) It doesn't help that I almost exclusively write in pencil (the perfectionist in me wants to fix all mistakes), which leans toward the invisible on top of the illegible :)

As for the capital days, I think we can safely blame the Germans for that one :) Crazy German capitalization rules....

Cruella Collett said...

Rosie - I am confused. You're saying that the Germans are to blame for English capitalization? But I thought Norwegian was far more influenced by German (all the way back from the Hansa Era) than English? We did have more capitalization earlier, though (I always thought that had to do with the fact that we wrote Danish - which in turn probably was influenced by German), so maybe we at some point took a detour from German capitalization rules while English never did. (But where did you get it in the first place?)

Ah, to be a linguist!

What happens if a John Hancock signs his John Hancock? Does he sign himself? Does he have to write on himself and not the paper? Or do they bring in another John Hancock on whom he writes? Or does the John Hancock defer to another name and sign his Abraham Lincoln? I wonder.

Interesting that you caught the reflection in the sunglasses!

Cruella Collett said...

Mark - I suspect that you, not unlike me, said that name all those times just because it sounds funny. "What happens if John Hancock signs his John Hancock?" Don't tell me that doesn't sound naughty.

Carolyn - actually, I didn't. It was all over the press here. "The poster of this huge Hollywood film has a picture of NORWAY in it?!? Wow!" Then someone told us they changed it depending on the location... Ah...

If handwriting is a reflection of one's personality then heaven forbid.........
Loved the blog very much,

Hey, I love the green ink!

I got tagged with this a while ago, too, and isn't it funny that the words you're supposed to write seem to change on occasion? ; )

Funny post. Enjoyed it lots.

I bet you can do calligraphy well :)

Happy Monday - even if it's early :)

You do have a lovely hand, Mari. At one time I would have been tempted to try and analyse it, but all I now remember is that your vertical lines show you to be a confident person who holds her own in any situation involving people- but I already knew that.

And I will do it as soon as I can find a pen. Writing it all with a crayon wouldn't count, would it?

M.J. Nicholls said...

That is true. You forget to mention Tony Hancock too. ::sniggers:: He is another very talented Hancock. ::sniggers again::

Cruella Collett said...

Yvonne - hehe, that bad, huh? ;)

Tessa - they do? I haven't noticed! Darn, I should have thought of that and changed them. Forced the blogging community to write about giraffes and digressions ;)

pseudonymous - Happy to please (now tell us who you are!)

Jemi - "well" is a relative term... I have done some, and I would love to know it properly. Especially Japanese calligraphy. But mostly I'm just messiing around.

Natasha - really? Well, thank you :) Glad you accept the challenge!
And I love that little tidbit of analyze. I don't know anything about handwriting analysis, so maybe I put my head (hand?) on the block for everyone to see here...

Mark - Oh, THAT Hancock. Are you referring to Tony Hancock the actor or Tony Hancock the footballer? *giggles*

Noooooo!! It's not Monday and you can't make me believe it!

Now that I'm out of high school, every day feels like a Saturday to me!

Your handwriting's cute and I love the green ink! Nice to see everyone writing the CAPS words I chose and (maybe wrongfully) changed. :D

I would have loved this if only because I got to read "crikey" but I really enjoyed this post. Especially since I didn't have to do it. But we miss out a lot on seeing people's handwriting these days. Do 12 year old girls still try on different script styles on for size before settling on the one that expresses their personality the best? Off topic: I went to college with a guy named John Hancock. (Hmm... guess the "guy" was unnecessary.)

I found this post very confusing. Could you draw me a diagram please.

Have a good week, Boonie

Cheeseboy said...

Cool tag. I dig it.

I never noticed that about the Hancock poster. Or I didn't know about it. Pretty cool. Too bad the movie sucked.

Cruella Collett said...

Hannah - very sorry to ruin your delusion, but the sad fact is: it's Monday now...

Amanda - you changed them? Good job! I wondering why I didn't think of that ;)

Kablooey - crikey, what can I say? It was a tough battle between crikey and blimey, but in the end blimey couldn't really keep up.
And if you hadn't written it was a guy I might have wondered why those cruel parents would do that to a girl!

Boonie (Aw.. Can I still call you Boonsong? Not that I don't like Boonie, it's just that it's sort of settled now...) - no diagrams were hurt during the making of this post! And thank you, I might need the wish for a good week as it is looking like a stressful one. May you have a far better week than me!

Cheeseboy - As far as suckage goes, I have seen worse, but I agree that "Hancock" hardly was Academy Award material. I like Will Smith, though. Can't help it.

My handwriting looks like a chicken wrote it with it's beak with it's eyes closed drunk while in a moving car.

Stop rubbing it in that you are Norwegian, we get it...lol

Did it, and threw in a bit of Hindi too, in your honour!

Sue said...

For some reason I tried to do a trebble clef last week, and didn't get to your "ah ha" moment. Failed totally. Foolishly I then tried a UK pounds thingy, and stuffed that up too. Can;t remember why I was tackling such things.
Hope your week turns out as well as your post, and doesn't live up to your dire expectations.

Cruella Collett said...

PTM - a shame I didn't tag you, then! And whåt is this åbøut me rubbing it in? Åre yøu jæløus? :P

Natasha - yay! I definitely couldn't read the Hindi, but the rest of it looked great :)(Well, the Hindi looked great too, but I couldn't read it...)

Sue - thank you! I will try to have a better week than depicted, but so far it is sadly living up to my expectations. I think I may need new reading glasses - I keep getting headaches in front of the computer :(

Well, now we all know you a little better. I didn't know you knitted. Nice hand writing too.

Love your creative intro here, Mari! I've done this, but I mucked it up badly, only writing PART of it, so maybe I will give it another go... that would be good, ne?

Thanks for your generous reply. It was so much better than I deserved (a state of affairs that's never bothered me in the past and so it doesn't now either).

On another matter: Sorry to be such a tardy Boonie with regard to replying to your comment left on my New Name post. Anyway, I’ve replied now. You might like to have a look at it. My reply is the usual intoxicating mix of wit, charm, and giraffeless tittle-tattle.

All the best from ‘barrassed bad blog comment replier Boonie

Stephen - I don't knit, not really. I can knit, so I periodically get an urge to knit something (which always turns out to be a scarf. Always), but I'm no champion. I just had to post this picture so that my friend Leanne (who is a knitting champion) could that I was telling the truth...

Tami - oh, I must have missed that post. If you want to you are hereby allowed to skip it entirely. Or do it over again - I don't think anyone has ever been prosecuted for not following blog tag rules... (I hope...)

Boonie (see, I used your new name! Yay me!) - I appologize for not appologizing more... I think I am way tardier than you in replying to comments, actually...
As for your reply there, it was very witty indeed. I think I may have to go back and read it again ;)

Helen Ginger said...

You have much better handwriting than I do. I used to have beautiful handwriting - practiced it to make it so, but not today. Too much typing and very little writing anything by hand.

Yes, it's Monday. Ooh, wait. Now it's Tuesday. But it's probably still Monday somewhere.

Cruella Collett said...

Helen - and now it's Wednesday (so I'm tardy again in my replies..)

I type too much to keep up a neat handwriting too. But I am addicted to post-its when working on my thesis, so the majority of handwriting I do these days are on yellow sticky notes.

Sorry, doing a little catch up. Loved your hand writing. If writing is the reflection then I'm anal. :D

You have a preety handwriting...mine would be truly illegible if I wrote fast, and not very interesting if I wrote slow.

Interesting concept.

I like hearing about how things are different in other countries - like Norwegians don't capitalize the days of the week.
What other things do Norwegians do differently? That would be a fun post.
Have a great weekend!

All right, all right, all right, but just to be a pain I am snail-mailing it to you. Hah! ;-)

You have a nice hand writing. Mine is not much to be proud about. I had to take extra classes in writing in 3rd grade (fortunately I was better in math).

Let me help you with some song lyrics: This is a cool one, the closing line of one of the songs on The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd: "There is no dark side of the moon, really. As a matter of fact it's all dark" MUHHAAHAAA >:)))

Cruella Collett said...

Jules - thanks so much for the award :) And I am fairly sure that if your handwriting is anal, then it doesn't reflect your personality!

Damyanti - I don't know what exactly defines an "interesting" handwriting. I'd certainly be interested to see yours (perhaps especially the illegible part of it, tee hee)

Michelle - every now and then I am inspired to write a "cultural differences" post, so there are a few posts in my archive of this kind. But I'll think about it and see if I can come up with more in the future (we also don't capitalize the name of months, the title of presidents and prime ministers, and we don't have Capital Letters on Each Word in titles [which explains why I don't do that on my blog titles. Which is silly, since it is written in English... But I started this way, and now I'm sort of stuck])

Leanne - haha, brilliant! Okay, I'll be ready with my camera when the box arrives ;)

Cold As Heaven - see, I would have had to take extra math classes. Fortunately my dad is a math teacher, so we solved that at the kitchen table...
And I can't hum those lyrics, as they are not really lyrics, are they? No tune... ;)
