On a computer near you: giraffes!

There haven’t been enough giraffes around here lately. Well, it’s about to change. A brand new giraffe baby is born in Norway’s biggest zoo, Kristiansand Dyrepark. He has not yet been named, but things are looking better for this calf than for the firstborn that the mother, Malin, had almost two years ago. Sadly, her first baby died. The new one, however, seems stronger. The zookeepers are monitoring mother and child, and I believe they are in the best of hands.

Interestingly enough, the zookeepers aren’t the only ones who can monitor the giraffes. Malin and her baby son are the stars of their very own reality show, broadcasted live on the website of one of Norway’s main newspapers. Not even giraffes have privacy these days! I’m not going to advocate giraffe privacy rights, though, because these pictures are way too charming. Just take a look at this:

Also, I have a feeling that the zoo will accept suggestions to names for the baby giraffe, as have been common when baby animals are born. I have participated in a baby giraffe naming contest on a previous occasion (when Leanne and I visited the baby giraffe in the zoo in Boston), and even though my vote didn’t tip the scale, I intend to participate again. Any suggestions as to what would be a good baby giraffe name?

Finally, today’s fun giraffe fact. Did you know that giraffes are among the mammals that need the smallest amount of sleep per day? A giraffe only sleeps between 10 minutes (!) and 2 hours in the course of 24 hours. So if you’re suffering from insomnia, the broadcast from Kristiansand Dyrepark might just be the reality show for you… (Wish I could function with so little sleep - imagine all the things I would get done!)

The photo is priceless. Giraffes are such unique creatures. I didn't know about their sleep. Wow that would be something. Naming a giraffe, now that would be neat.

what perfection! I nearly wrote a whole novel based on the word 'giraffe' and in it I describe the birth of a giraffe - I'm inspired to go and look for it and send it to you! Alas, alack - no names spring to mind today but I will ponder it.

Mason - I love that photo too. He looks so - attentive!

Jan - oh, I would LOVE to read that! What in the world inspired you to write a novel based on the word giraffe? That is such a cool thing to do - why only "nearly"? (And why didn't I think of that...?)

Looks like ET, but I am he wouldn't want to be saddled with a name like that.
