On crotte de chien

Pardon my French, but I couldn’t very well entitle my post ”On dog shit” (especially since that wouldn’t at all have been appropriate since we’ve only come to the letter C in the A-Z challenge…). The thing is, I feel the need to rant a little. Not about dogs. About dog owners.

I get that dogs have to “go”, just like humans. Despite centuries of domestication, they have not yet mastered the ultimate trick – using the loo. Thus they have to go outside. Very well. For this to be an acceptable solution, however, it requires a responsible dog owner. In my opinion, owners who cannot be bothered to pick up afterwards shouldn’t be allowed to keep dogs at all!

It certainly doesn’t help that it’s snow outside. In fact, it almost makes it worse. Because the snow preserves the lovely little turds, you see, so that when winter melts away, the evidence is still there. And trust me, three months old crapadoodle refrigerated by snow is every bit as disgusting as fresh one.

If you’re a dog owner who considers the scooping one of the least pleasant things about owning a dog, you have my sympathy. But if you draw the conclusion from this that you should be exempt from picking up after your canine friend, you deserve no sympathy at all. And please make sure to not only scoop up, but also dispose of the bag properly. Leaving “doggy bags” behind is unhygienic, it’s ugly, it’s disrespectful, and it can be downright dangerous to young children. If the kid is in the right age it will not only touch, but often try to taste everything and anything found on the ground. A dog can be put down for biting a child, but what about an owner leaving toxic waste behind just because (s)he is lazy?

I’m exaggerating. I don’t mean people should be executed for not picking up after their dogs. But I do think they should be sentenced to community service – cleaning sidewalks for dog “surprises”, of course.

I read this having my breakfast,,,lol
I think people should clean up after their dogs, after all it's not a pretty sight or healthy.
Most important issue.

What a funny picture! I agree with you. Especially when they allow their dogs to come into your yard, which I hate because we don't have dog.

Makes me wonder what they'd do if they had children. It's basically the same as changing a diaper.

Great post and thanks for the language lesson :)

I totally agree.

I'm not a fan of dogs. :D And I'm not that keen on a great many dog owners either. :D

If the owner isn't responsible then he isn't the master -- ask the pet.

Enjoy the day double C! :)

I've always wondered about the logic behind dog fowling fines. In prettier areas of Edinburgh, they can go up to £1000, but in the mucky city streets, only about £100. Seems the reverse would be more effective.

LOL, frozen dog poop! Thank goodness my dogs have their very own personal yard Loo. So when company goes out in my yard I warn them "watch out for land mines." :)

My next planned WiP was to be titled something along the lines of Beauty and the Beast. Now I have this image in my head, and I will forever be snorting to myself...

Fortunately for us my dog is very finicky about where she goes, and always goes in a woodsy area, never on the grass.

My dog goes on bushes in the woods. Really. He squats over bristly bushes! I take a bag in case he goes on someone's property or where people walk but he rarely does. And I live in a very out of the way place so the trail isn't at all littered. My bugabear is the litter from cars in front of our property this time of year. God, people - take it home - don't dump it in front of my house!
There! Now don't we feel better. Uh, and a c word that everyone has been to purrlite to mention is CRAP! CANINE CRAP!!
I bet Japan was a bit better than the rest of us on dog and human crap?

Wow...I'm glad I don't have to worry about this. I own a dog, but we live out in the country so I don't have to worry about her leaving surprises to offend others. It also means I don't have to worry about the clean up. ;-)

You're right - scoop the poop!

if it had been fossilized dinosaur droppings, you could have called it "On Coprolites." glad we don't have to deal with that stuff not getting cleaned up.

Oh, don’t get me started. I get that it is cold, but when the dog poops on the only pathway people can actually walk on (the others covered in ice and snowdrifts) the owner needs to pick it up. Don’t want to bend down? Buy one of those gadgets that allows you to stand and pick it up- it’s out there. GRRR. I like dogs though.

Oh, you are soooo right! They shouldn't have dogs if they cannot pick up after them. Nice "C" post!

Oh, no kidding! We share a yard with a neighbors, and they would just let their dog romp about in the yard without a leash during the winter. Let me tell you how many times dogshit has ended up on our shoes! Hmph! :(

My dog is strange and only goes in his own yard. He WILL NOT pee or poop anywhere else.

Too funny. Loved it and totally concur.

I'm a dog lover, but I also try to be a responsible dog owner. Then again, I live in a rural area where dogs roam free (including four of my six) and there's no way to pick up after them. I would, though, if I lived in town. I've scooped plenty of poop from my backyard (and desposited it on various flowering shrubs as fertilizer).

CC, you would not believe. There are people who actually walk their dogs in my 'hood on a leash and will stop and let them crap in my yard and then just keep walking. !!!

Me: Uhh, could you NOT let your dumb dog crap in my yard??? GAH!

Dog owners have a weird entitlement attitude Leigh the cat owner doesn't get~ :D <3

Well said. I almost threw my sub at someone to tossed a doggie bag bomb from about seven feet away into the garbage can I was sitting next to. Thankfully, he was spot on, and it went in, no problem. Still though, I felt like feeding it to him.

Sometimes I hate people... ;)

Erk, I was just munching on my muesli. Great photo though! I don't understand why people bother with the plastic bag, then drop that, it doesn't make sense at all.

btw I think I'm certifiably crazy, but to preserve a tad of sanity, I'm not returning to any blogs on which I comment to check for witty replies! As ever I appreciate your support, thankyou.

This is the very reason why we not so affectionately call our street "dog shit ally". I live on a tree-shaded street near the park that leads straight to the river, so we have a constant stream of dog-walkers. Our yard seems to be a favorite stopping place. My husband has taken to shoveling it out into the street in frustration - literally dozens of turds at a time. Lovely, I know. The worst is when we walk outside and there's a dog (or two!) crouched down right smack in the middle of our front lawn and the owner just smiles and waves. Oh, the humanity!

Amen to that. I live in a dog-lovin' city and I am continually amazed at how hypocritical people are about their dogs. They will feed them gourmet organic treats, dress them up in trendy coats and take them into public buildings without thinking about the other patrons. But many of these same people will only clean up after their dogs when no on is looking. And then, as you point out, some of those that do clean up toss the plastic bags in the gutter or underneath parked cars. So disrespectful and harmful for the environment. Yuck. Ok, rant over. At least I'm not the only one. - G

Since I am constantly cleaning up my front yard after dogs I do not own, I am with ya!

I own cats and keep them inside because I do not want to pick up after a dog and do not want to tick off my neighbors.

I'm with you! I'll go even further! Most people around here do seem to pick up most of the poop. BUT, it's the dog pee that does all the damage! If stains, it kills grass and plants, and it STINKS...
Love the photo!!!

Hysterical photo. This is certainly a pet peeve of mine, and my city is very much pro-dog, which also seems to mean pro-idiot dog owner. It never ceases to amaze me that they find it acceptable to leave their dog's crap where my children play.

Good luck with the A to Z Challenge!
